Slim floor-standing loudspeakers like the OBERON 5 are considered to be the all-rounders among sound transducers: they require comparatively little floor space, can be easily integrated into most living environments and impress with their outstanding sound quality.
The OBERON 5 is one of the best-sounding speakers in its class, thanks not only to its particularly sturdy cabinet, which is reinforced with internal cross braces to protect it from unwanted cabinet resonance, but also to the technical ingredients that are not commonplace. So it’s no surprise that the two bass-midrange drivers, developed in-house at DALI, promise a deep, dynamic bass and a balanced, natural midrange. This is because the drivers not only feature particularly light yet extremely rigid 130 mm (5 1/4”) wood-fibre cones, but also magnet systems manufactured with the patented magnetic material SMC and high-quality voice coils wound from a copper-coated aluminium wire. All this results in a particularly impulsive, lively and faithful reproduction of all music and film soundtracks.
Above 2,400 Hz, the specially designed OBERON tweeter takes over the reproduction of all upper mids and high frequencies. The extra-large 29 mm dome tweeter is made of an exceptionally light fabric and can therefore reproduce even the shortest impulses in the signal path very precisely. Thanks to its wide dispersion pattern, the OBERON 5 is able to fill the entire room with a cleanly staggered stereo sound image, rather than the few listening spots located exactly opposite the speakers in the “sweet spot”.
LOW-MIDRANGE SPEAKER
Like all DALI drivers designed to reproduce mid and low frequencies, the two 130 mm (5 1/4”) bass-midrange drivers of the OBERON 5 feature a wood fibre cone. The mixture of a fine-grained paper pulp reinforced by the addition of wood fibres results in a stiff, lightweight structure with excellent acoustic properties. In combination with particularly low-loss surrounds and centre spiders, the cone reproduces even the finest sound details with extreme clarity and precision.
The cones are surrounded by a rubber surround which, due to its soft and very flexible material, allows the cone to vibrate absolutely freely, has very low damping and allows the magnet system to control the cone movement very precisely.
SMC
The use of SMC in the magnet system significantly reduces mechanical distortion caused by hysteresis and eddy currents. In combination, these improvements to the magnet drive significantly reduce third-order distortion, which is why the OBERON Series speakers provide a longer, more relaxed listening experience with unobtrusive midrange and an amazing level of detail in this class.
The drive consists of a large ferrite magnet surrounding a pole piece made from the unique combination of iron and SMC. SMC is a magnetic powder that makes it possible to form strong magnets that do not conduct electricity. Since the ferrite iron forms only the base of the pole piece, the negative effects of the iron are minimised, while the 10 mm thick SMC disc on top of the pole piece is placed exactly in the centre of the main working area of the four-layer voice coil.
Tweeter
The tweeter, with its ultra-light 29 mm diameter fabric dome, was developed specifically for the OBERON Series. The cone is made of an extremely light fabric that weighs less than half as much as most other dome tweeters on the market, at only 0.060 mg per mm2.
Thanks to the large diaphragm, the tweeter achieves a higher sound pressure level with a smaller excursion, allowing the voice coil to move with great precision and control at all times. The tweeter’s magnet system is cooled with ferrofluid in the interest of higher power handling, perfect damping and to support absolutely centred voice coil excursion.
